Synopsis:
The story of Depression-era fighter and folk hero Jim Braddock, who defeated heavyweight champ Max Baer in a 15-round slugfest in 1935.
Paddy's role:
Mike Wilson, a down and out former New York stockbroker who meets up with Braddock in a work line and then becomes his friend and number one fan. Although a fictional character Wilson's story of personal downfall during the Depression serves as a counterpoint to Braddock's astonishing ascent.
Of his role Paddy said, "Mike struck me as the kind of very human, very relatable character who is so much a part of Ron Howard's film-making style.

Trivia:
Paddy was picked personally for his role by Crowe after he saw him in 'In America' he was also backed by the wife of a producer who asked her husband "to see Paddy" after being moved to tears by the same film.
Rosemarie DeWitt, who plays Sara Wilson, Braddok's family friend and wife of Mike, is the granddaughter of the real Jim Braddock. She is the daughter of his daughter Rosemarie, who is portrayed by Ariel Waller in the film.

Large parts of the film that is seen to be 1930's New York were infact filmed in the Portugese quater of Toronto, Canada.
